SonoSim Ultrasound Training Solution Pericardiocentesis: Ultrasound-Guided Procedure Module

The Pericardiocentesis: Ultrasound-Guided Procedure Module teaches one the principles of performing pericardiocentesis utilizing ultrasound guidance. Cardiac sonographic anatomy is reviewed, with emphasis on detecting pericardial effusions and identifying findings suggestive of cardiac tamponade. Then, learn about the two techniques of ultrasound guidance for pericardiocentesis: (1) static-image guidance and (2) real-time image guidance. The procedural steps for performing ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis are described, including locating the ideal procedure site, guiding the needle to the target, and confirming successful needle placement and resulting fluid evacuation. One develops the requisite cognitive task awareness and visuospatial skills required to successfully perform ultrasound-guided pericardiocentesis via 10 real-ultrasound cases.
