Preventing Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is an established and increasingly important condition in children and adolescents. This course reviews pediatric disease processes, major risk factors, risk-based screening and diagnosis, early complications, family-centered prevention, and initial management. Pediatric evidence is prioritized, and adult or type 1 diabetes evidence is included only when it directly informs pediatric practice and is clearly identified as indirect. Youth-onset type 2 diabetes is rising in the United States, driven largely by increasing rates of childhood obesity and shaped by social and environmental conditions that affect diet and physical activity (Wagenknecht et al., 2023). Clinicians need current, practical guidance to recognize risk early, screen accurately, and partner with families on prevention and care.
