The American Medical Association (AMA)/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale (RVS) Update Committee (RUC) is an expert panel of physicians which makes recommendations to the federal government on the resources required to provide medical services. When developing recommendations, the RUC considers physicians work (including the time and intensity/complexity), practice expense inputs (clinical staff time, medical supplies, and medical equipment), and professional liability insurance (PLI) associated with performing a service. The RUC meets three times per year (April, September, and January) which aligns closely with the CPT Editorial Panel meeting schedule. The RUC will discuss and develop recommendations at the September 2026 meeting for new and revised Category I codes from the May 2026 CPT Editorial Panel meeting.
