Beyond Looking Good: Approaches to Managing Obesity and Its Complications

Obesity is a highly complex, chronic disease driven by multiple biological and environmental factors. Despite its designation as a serious, progressive condition associated with significant comorbidities, it remains undertreated. A key challenge is the persistent clinical inertia in initiating and sustaining effective, long-term therapeutic strategies, often compounded by a lack of awareness of the most clinical trial data for advanced pharmacologic options. Weight-related bias and systemic disparities present additional, formidable barriers to patient engagement and adherence. In this activity, Lucia M. Novak, MSN, ANP-BC and Leigh Perreault, MD discuss the importance of addressing obesity as a serious disease that warrants long-term treatment. The program reviews the most recent evidence on incretin-based pharmacologic treatments, including their safety, efficacy, and tolerability. Participants will learn how to incorporate pharmacotherapy into comprehensive, long-term obesity management plans in accordance with the latest evidence, while also exploring how to recognize and address weight-related care disparities.
