Bridging the Gap: Overcoming Implicit Bias and Why Patient Perspectives Matter in Diabetes Care

Black Americans die of diabetes at more than twice the rate of White Americans, and closing that gap depends as much on what patients believe as on what we prescribe. Using video segments from the Better Black Health television show, this session pairs patients’ own words about whether the diagnosis is accurate, whether the disease is a death sentence, why the medication was abandoned, what they drink and eat, and whether they trust their clinician with the evidence that supports or corrects each perspective. Participants will leave able to apply the HbA1c correction indicated in African American patients and to use counseling and communication strategies shown to improve trust, adherence, and glycemic control.
