Candida Auris: Drug-Resistant Superbug

Candida auris, also reported as Candidozyma auris, is a frequently multidrug-resistant yeast that colonizes patients without symptoms, survives on surfaces and equipment, and continues to spread within and between United States healthcare facilities. Containing it depends on a sequence of linked actions that cross professional and organizational boundaries, and a failure at any one of them undoes the rest. This activity addresses the points in that sequence where execution is documented to fail. Learners distinguish colonization from clinical infection, evaluate laboratory identification and susceptibility results, select screening, precautions, and disinfection appropriate to a specified setting, formulate treatment that leaves colonization alone, and construct the communication required when a patient with known status moves between levels of care. Content follows current guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Environmental Protection Agency, finalized national surveillance, and peer-reviewed evidence, with emerging and lower-certainty recommendations identified as such.
