Cardiac Arrest and Spinal Anesthesia Patient Safety

Although the incidence of cardiac arrest under spinal anesthesia is low, the complications are often serious resulting in death or brain damage. Many anesthesia practitioners may be unaware of this relatively rare occurrence and may not know the associated risk factors, the early warning signs, or the best medications to prevent or treat it. This course will discuss risk factors and the specific characteristic clinical findings that can occur very quickly. It is critical for those providing anesthesia to immediately recognize these signs so that the patient can be promptly treated to either prevent cardiac arrest or to minimize the amount of time without spontaneous circulation to avoid serious brain damage.
