Cardiology: Real-World Tactics to Address Health Inequities

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia seen around the world. More than 12 million people in the United States will have AF by 2030, quintupling their risk for severe ischemic strokes. While the introduction of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) has enhanced stroke prophylaxis in AF, these medications are not equitably offered to all individuals, for a variety of reasons both explicit and implicit. In this CME Outfitters BriefCase activity, an expert faculty follows the journey of a 48-year-old Black female with AF to illuminate disparities in the quality of care she is offered. Frank questions and candid discussions about the impact of implicit bias, social determinants of health, shared decision making, and health literacy provide actionable and individualized strategies to improve outcomes for all patients with AF.
