Critical Warning Signs in Postpartum Care

Despite the critical importance of maternal health during the postpartum period, many women do not attend recommended postpartum follow-up visits for a variety of reasons. Limited contact with healthcare providers during this time increases the risk of adverse outcomes for both birthing person and baby, as conditions such as infection, postpartum hemorrhage, and cardiovascular complications remain leading causes of postpartum morbidity and mortality. Early identification of critical maternal warning signs is essential to ensuring timely, life-saving care; however, gaps in care and limited provider contact can delay recognition and intervention when symptoms arise. Educating and engaging doulas and home visitors on urgent maternal warning signs represents a promising strategy to address this gap. Research indicates that doulas play a vital role in postpartum care, as their established, trusting relationships with birthing people position them to recognize concerning symptoms, advocate for timely care, and ultimately help improve maternal health outcomes.
