Diverticular Disease of the Colon

Colonic diverticular disease encompasses diverticulosis, defined by mucosal and submucosal outpouchings in the colon, and diverticulitis, which occurs when these diverticula become inflamed or infected. This course differentiates the clinical presentations of diverticulosis, which is frequently asymptomatic, from those of diverticulitis, which commonly present with left lower-quadrant abdominal pain, fever, and leukocytosis, and diagnostic evaluation, which relies on clinical assessment and confirmatory imaging to distinguish uncomplicated from complicated disease. Participants will gain an understanding of management approaches, including conservative outpatient care, with selective antibiotic use and dietary modification, to hospitalization, percutaneous drainage, or surgery for severe or complicated cases, as well as ongoing controversies, including antibiotic stewardship and indications for elective colectomy. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in recognizing clinical presentations, interpreting diagnostic findings, stratifying disease severity, applying evidence-based, individualized management strategies, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach in managing colonic diverticular disease to optimize patient outcomes.
