Doc to Doc Series: Musculoskeletal Medicine

Healthcare providers often struggle to explain complex musculoskeletal conditions to patients in ways that promote understanding, compliance, and informed decision-making. There is a need for improved patient communication skills regarding conditions like greater trochanteric bursitis, sciatica versus lumbar radiculopathy, and osteoarthritis management. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After participating in this activity, learners will be able to: 1. Explain greater trochanteric bursitis and its underlying gluteal tendonopathy to patients using relatable analogies (such as comparing bursitis to getting a blister from new shoes) 2. Differentiate between sciatica and lumbar radiculopathy when communicating with patients, including appropriate treatment implications 3. Educate patients about the biomechanical rationale for weight loss in osteoarthritis management, specifically the 4:1 weight-bearing ratio concept 4. Implement patient-centered communication strategies that improve treatment adherence and clinical outcomes
