EQIPP: Oral Health Promotion in Primary Care

Many people are surprised to learn that dental caries is the most common chronic disease of childhood, occurring five times more frequently than asthma and seven times more frequently than hay fever. Despite these statistics, oral health is commonly overlooked in early childhood care. As trusted early-care providers, pediatric primary health care providers (PPHPs) are in a key position to help families establish a dental home for children aged 12 months and older. Through regular health supervision visits in the first year, the PPHP has valuable opportunities to educate families about oral health and offer timely referrals to a dental professional. The key clinical activities in this course define the actions that are essential for quality care for oral health. Learners will find relevant background information that includes evidence-based guidelines, scientific recommendations, best practices, related tools and resources, and more.
