GLP-1 Nutrition Red Flags for Clinicians: Protecting Muscle, Metabolic Health & Nutritional Adequacy

GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GIP/GLP-1 medications are now prescribed at rapidly increasing rates for obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes across the U.S. Nutrition plays a major role both in supporting efficacy while on therapy and in sustaining results after discontinuation yet these agents directly alter appetite, intake, and body composition, with a disproportionate share of weight loss coming from lean mass rather than fat. This activity will discuss the GLIM framework as a rapid nutrition risk screen, evidence-supported guidance on protein intake, fiber introduction, and GI symptom management during GLP-1 therapy and when to refer a patient to a registered dietitian. Earlier recognition of nutrition risk preserves lean mass during treatment, and supports better-sustained outcomes after medication discontinuation. GLP-1s cannot replace lifestyle and dietary changes, but they can complement them.
