Human Trafficking – Recognition, Response, and Referral

Human trafficking is a global pandemic and healthcare providers are on the front lines of being able to identify and help victims. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that 24.9 million men, women, and children are bought, sold, and enslaved around the world is often hidden in plain sight. They are in factories, fields, private homes, and on our streets; and every day, they interact with healthcare providers. No population is exempt: it affects all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and other demographics. Healthcare professionals are in a unique and trusted position, making it imperative for them to be fully informed about human trafficking. Our faculty facilitators will cover topics such as confidentiality, safety, building trust to ensure that the healthcare needs of patients are addressed, mandatory reporting, child welfare organizations, and how community members can support survivors physical and mental health needs during the pandemic and beyond. This course will showcase realistic examples of how healthcare professionals can recognize human trafficking in the healthcare setting, and make safe referrals to community service providers. CME Objectives: After completing this activity, learners will be able to: Define both sex and labor trafficking and identify the scope of the problem Recognize the common indicators, risk factors and red flags for human trafficking Discuss the approach to a patient who may be a victim of human trafficking, including when using telemedicine Identify community resources for patients impacted by human trafficking Identify ways to help victims and support organizations Discuss reporting of human trafficking Increase advocacy within the healthcare community for victims of trafficking.
