Individualizing HIV Treatment for Diverse Populations

Although advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) have transformed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) into a manageable chronic condition, important gaps persist in the consistent, equitable application of care across diverse populations and global settings. Rapid innovation, including long-acting injectable (LAI) and multimechanism-mechanism therapeutic approaches has outpaced guideline implementation and clinician familiarity, contributing to suboptimal treatment selection and delayed adoption. Health care professionals face ongoing challenges integrating emerging evidence into practice, particularly in resource-limited settings, while also addressing complex patient factors such as adherence, resistance risk, comorbidities, and social drivers of health. As a result, there is a critical need for targeted, globally relevant education to strengthen clinician competence in applying evolving guidelines, individualizing treatment decisions, and incorporating patient preferences and cultural considerations to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in HIV care. In this CMEO Snack, expert faculty will discuss global HIV treatment guidelines and available ART regimens, including standard and long-acting options, with a focus on selecting optimal, evidence-based ART tailored to individual patient needs and preferences. Faculty will also explore simplification and switching of treatments, pre-switch evaluation, identification of heavily treatment-experienced patients and those requiring special considerations, counseling on dose frequency, and the importance of culturally responsive, patient-centered communication across diverse global settings.
