The goal of this program is to improve the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in the pediatric population using combination therapy, and the transition of care from pediatric to adult gastrointestinal provider for patients with IBD diagnosed in childhood. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to: 1. Compare the combination of infliximab plus azathioprine with either monotherapy in patients with treatment-naive Crohn disease. 2. Cite literature regarding adult vs pediatric IBD. 3. Explain results of the COMBINE trial comparing anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) therapy alone vs anti-TNF therapy plus low-dose methotrexate in pediatric patients with IBD. 4. Implement strategies for assessing a patient s readiness for transition from pediatric to adult IBD care. 5. Identify resources and guidelines available to assist in the transition process of pediatric patients with IBD to adult providers.
