Physician burnout has reached crisis levels. In a 2021 national survey of 2,440 U.S. physicians, Shanafelt and colleagues found that 62.8% met criteria for burnout, up from 38.2% in 2020 and 43.9% in 2017; mean emotional-exhaustion scores rose 38.6% and depersonalization 60.7% in a single year. The 2019 National Academy of Medicine consensus report Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout reframes burnout as a systems problem while explicitly preserving a role for individual-level capacity-building self-awareness, values clarification, communication skill, and meaning-in-work practices as essential complements to systems redesign. That same report identifies the hidden curriculum of medical training, stigma around physician help-seeking, and under-development of non-clinical professional skills as modifiable contributors to burnout. Practicing physicians need a private, structured, evidence-informed curriculum that develops these capacities at a pace compatible with clinical work and that produces a durable written plan the learner can return to throughout a career. Mastery and Wellness: How to Thrive as a Physician is designed to close that gap.
