Mucormycosis

Mucormycosis is a life-threatening invasive fungal infection caused by organisms in the order Mucorales and is associated with rapid angioinvasion, tissue necrosis, and high mortality. It most often affects individuals with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, hematologic malignant neoplasms, transplants, neutropenia, severe coronavirus disease 2019 infection, trauma, burns, or other forms of immunosuppression. Clinicians may fail to consistently recognize early site-specific manifestations, obtain timely biopsy and histopathologic confirmation, distinguish mucormycosis from other invasive fungal infections, or initiate urgent antifungal and surgical treatment. This activity tackles this practice gap by reviewing risk factors, clinical presentations, diagnostic strategies, imaging findings, histopathologic features, antifungal therapy, surgical debridement, prophylaxis, and interprofessional care. Participants will gain actionable skills to improve early diagnosis, treatment selection, complication prevention, and coordinated patient-centered management.
