Oral Health Considerations for Patients With Systemic Disease

Due to demographic and population changes, advances in the medical and surgical management of systemic diseases, and improvements in population oral health, there are increasing interactions between oral healthcare providers and medical providers. These interactions are often aimed at supporting patient care and dental management in the context of systemic disease and its associated management and therapy. This educational activity reviews the role of clinicians and dentists in detecting, diagnosing, evaluating, and managing patients with common systemic diseases. This activity explores the impact of systemic disease on dental treatment options and the potential effects of dental treatments on systemic disease management. The bidirectional relationship between oral and systemic health and therapy facilitates the exploration of the role of interdisciplinary teams in delivering care to individuals with systemic diseases and oral health needs. The increasing evidence for the role of the oral cavity in overall health, as well as the impact of overall health on the oral cavity, is also explored and discussed. By increasing the knowledge base of oral healthcare providers and medical providers regarding dental management considerations for patients with systemic diseases, this educational activity helps decrease barriers to understanding and increase the potential for meaningful interactions and collaboration across healthcare settings, ultimately benefiting patients.
