Plague (Yersinia pestis Infection)

This continuing medical education activity provides a focused review of plague, a rare but potentially fatal zoonotic infection caused by Yersinia pestis. Although plague is uncommon in many regions, delayed recognition and treatment can rapidly lead to sepsis, respiratory failure, meningitis, shock, and death. A key practice gap exists in clinicians’ recognition of the varied clinical presentations of bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic plague, particularly in patients with relevant travel, animal, flea, or endemic-area exposures. This activity is designed to narrow that gap by reviewing epidemiology, transmission, clinical manifestations, diagnostic strategies, infection-control precautions, antimicrobial treatment, recognition of complications, postexposure prophylaxis, and public health reporting. Participants are expected to gain improved diagnostic accuracy, earlier risk stratification, more timely initiation of evidence-based therapy, stronger prevention of complications and transmission, and more effective interdisciplinary coordination in the care of patients with suspected or confirmed plague.
