Reclaiming the Black Body: Re-imagining Our Relationship to Food

Food is never just food. It is memory, survival, spirituality, culture, and power. For Black communities, our relationship to food has been shaped by colonization, enslavement, racial capitalism, misogynoir, and systemic body policing. These forces have disrupted ancestral connections to land, nourishment, and embodiment while pathologizing our survival responses as disordered. In this transformative and culturally grounded webinar, Alishia McCullough invites participants to re-imagine what are commonly labeled eating disorders through the lens of eating imbalances embodied adaptations rooted in historical trauma and systemic oppression. Drawing from somatic therapy, African-centered healing frameworks, and lived clinical experience, this presentation explores how fatphobia, healthism, and racialized body standards continue to impact Black bodies today. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the political nature of food, practical tools for disrupting shame-based narratives, and pathways toward restoring embodied nourishment, pleasure, and collective healing. This session is ideal for clinicians, wellness professionals, educators, community leaders, and anyone seeking a liberatory, trauma-informed approach to food and body healing.
