Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an established and highly effective method of preventing sexually transmitted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and has been instrumental in declining incidence rates. Adherence and access to HIV prevention still pose challenges due to stigma and false beliefs, and the small fraction of individuals with HIV who are unaware of their status are responsible for a significant number of new cases. Clinicians and multidisciplinary care teams must familiarize themselves with new data on emerging PrEP options to increase optimal and equitable HIV prevention as well as to engage with patients about sexual health in meaningful and compassionate ways. In this CME Outfitters recorded symposium, expert faculty will guide learners on the implementation of routine HIV testing and on adopting a status-neutral approach to effectively promote prevention strategies and PrEP initiation. Faculty will evaluate current and emerging PrEP options, introduce emerging LAI PrEP options, and discuss optimal patient selection criteria, transitioning strategies, and monitoring considerations. Faculty will model integration of effective patient engagement strategies to collaboratively initiate PrEP treatment and support adherence.
