Too Much Testing: Opportunities to Improve Value by Doing Less – Lesly Dossett, MD, MPH

Series Overview The Department of Surgery Grand Rounds features presentations relating to best practices in surgery, teamwork, and groundbreaking clinical research. Grand Rounds features a variety of surgical specialties, in order to best represent the population of clinicians and learners within the department and to broaden surgical knowledge outside of one s direct specialty. We invite presenters from campus and across the world to provide meaningful learning experiences to members of our department. Learning Objectives As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will: Explain the contribution of low-value preoperative testing to healthcare waste and its lack of association with improved patient outcomes. Describe the principles of de-implementation science and how they apply to reducing unnecessary surgical testing. Identify key drivers of persistent low-value preoperative testing within surgical systems, including behavioral, cultural, and system-level factors. Evaluate the effectiveness of multi-component, system-aligned interventions in reducing unnecessary preoperative testing.
