Synchronized Electrical Cardioversion

Synchronized cardioversion is an emergency intervention used to treat unstable tachycardic rhythms or tachyarrhythmias that fail to respond to pharmacologic therapy. The procedure delivers a timed electrical shock synchronized with the patient s cardiac cycle to restore an organized rhythm while reducing the risk of inducing ventricular fibrillation. Appropriate recognition of unstable cardiac rhythms and timely intervention are essential components of advanced cardiovascular care and emergency management. This course reviews the indications, contraindications, procedural principles, safety considerations, and evidence-based guidelines for emergency synchronized cardioversion. Participants learn to identify patients requiring cardioversion, apply appropriate treatment algorithms, select effective energy strategies, and manage potential complications. Collaboration among clinicians, emergency specialists, cardiologists, nurses, paramedics, respiratory professionals, and other interprofessional team members improves communication, accelerates treatment decisions, enhances procedural safety, and optimizes patient outcomes during cardiovascular emergencies.
