Hemangioblastoma

Hemangioblastomas are rare, benign, highly vascular tumors of WHO grade 1 that primarily involve the central nervous system (CNS). These tumors most commonly occur in the cerebellum, followed by the spinal cord and the brainstem. Hemangioblastomas can be sporadic or associated with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, a genetic disorder that predisposes individuals to develop various tumors. The clinical presentation of hemangioblastomas depends on their location in the CNS. Cerebellar tumors are often associated with headaches, nausea, vomiting, and signs of increased intracranial pressure, whereas brainstem tumors can cause motor and sensory deficits, ataxia, and potentially fatal intracerebral hemorrhage. Spinal hemangioblastomas may present with localized pain, motor weakness, sensory disturbances, and dysfunction of the bowel or bladder. Magnetic resonance imaging, which will typically reveal a cystic mass with a contrast-enhancing mural nodule, is frequently used to diagnose the disease. The primary treatment for these tumors is surgical resection, with the prognosis after surgery being generally favorable, with low rates of recurrence. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s ability to recognize hemangioblastomas, perform the recommended evaluation, and initiate an appropriate interprofessional management approach to improve patient outcomes.
