Simulation Training and Skill Assessment in Disaster Medicine

Disaster medicine focuses on preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery during natural and human-made disasters. Common clinical challenges include polytrauma, burns, crush injuries, toxic exposures, infectious outbreaks, environmental injuries, acute exacerbations of chronic disease, and psychological trauma. Despite increasing disaster frequency, clinician preparedness remains limited because traditional education provides inadequate exposure to surge conditions, resource scarcity, ethical triage, and interprofessional crisis coordination. Simulation-based training addresses these gaps by recreating high-acuity, resource-limited scenarios in controlled environments. Structured simulations strengthen technical and nontechnical skills, including triage, procedural performance, communication, leadership, and decision-making. Standardized assessment tools, direct observation, and performance rating scales help establish competency benchmarks, identify deficiencies, and guide remediation. This activity is designed to improve clinician proficiency in disaster simulation assessment, implementation of competency-based training strategies, and effective collaboration within interprofessional disaster response teams.
