Cri Du Chat Syndrome

Cri du Chat syndrome is a rare chromosomal deletion disorder caused by partial or complete loss of the short arm of chromosome 5, producing a characteristic high-pitched cat-like cry in infancy along with craniofacial abnormalities, developmental delay, intellectual disability, and multisystem complications. This course reviews the clinical features of this disorder, which can vary in severity according to the size and location of the deletion, reflecting important genotype phenotype correlations that influence neurologic, behavioral, cardiovascular, feeding, and developmental manifestations. Advances in prenatal screening, cytogenetics, chromosomal microarray analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization are also discussed. Patients will also gain an understanding of management approaches that remain supportive and interprofessional, emphasizing early intervention, rehabilitation therapies, developmental support, medical surveillance, and genetic counseling. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying the genetic basis and clinical presentation of Cri du Chat syndrome, applying an appropriate diagnostic evaluation, understanding associated comorbidities, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition to optimize long-term outcomes, coordinate interprofessional care, and improve quality of life for affected individuals and their families.
