Nitrogen Dioxide Toxicity

Nitrogen dioxide is a highly toxic oxidizing gas produced during high-temperature combustion from motor vehicles, gas stoves, power plants, and agricultural silos. Staying in enclosed or poorly ventilated environments, industrial workplaces, and confined spaces increases exposure risk. Clinical manifestations range from cough, throat irritation, and dyspnea to delayed noncardiogenic pulmonary edema and acute lung injury. Diagnosis is clinical and exposure-based, though findings of hypoxemia and changes on chest radiography may provide corroborating evidence. Management includes prompt removal from exposure, supportive care, supplemental oxygen administration, and close observation. Prognosis depends on exposure severity and timely treatment. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in evaluating and managing nitrogen toxicity. Participants will advance their mastery of the condition’s etiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Improved skills will equip clinicians to collaborate effectively with interprofessional teams caring for affected individuals.
