ARIA Fundamentals: What Every Clinician Needs to Know About ARIA Risk Mitigation, Identification, and Management

Alzheimer s Disease (AD) is undergoing a profound paradigm shift across the globe. Once a clinical diagnosis limited to minimally effective symptomatic treatments for later-stage disease, AD is now recognized as a biologic entity that can be treated early with amyloid-targeting therapies (ATTs), the first treatments demonstrated to slow cognitive decline. While this represents a significant advancement in care, use of these agents is associated with the novel class-specific adverse effects, amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), that impact patient eligibility and therapeutic implementation. With increasing regulatory approval and availability of lecanemab and donanemab throughout the world, it is essential that care teams are able to navigate ARIA effectively. Though care team members play similar roles across regions, there are a variety of unique considerations in different geographies that influence care paths, such as regulatory requirements/guidance, infrastructure, experience, and sentiments. Accordingly, this EfficientCME curriculum addresses optimal strategies to ensure timely diagnosis, informed patient counseling, and safe, coordinated care for patients receiving ATTs across regions. In part 1 of this global curriculum, expert faculty from the United States and Europe will discuss aspects of ARIA that are relevant to any region implementing ATTs, including ARIA risk factors, symptoms, key radiographic features, and vital elements of interdisciplinary communication to ensure safe, comprehensive, and consistent care in patients receiving ATTs.
