Members of the Spanish-speaking community tend to adopt a passive role in medical decision-making, viewing the health professional as the expert, and ultimately limiting the expression of their doubts, concerns, and needs. This course is designed to equip health professionals with information related to the fundamentals of motivational interviewing, the core elements of motivational interviewing spirit, and the communication micro-skills associated with this evidence-based approach. A key component of this course includes two role-play exercises and discussions that provide insight into the perspective of a health professional, a person living with Parkinson’s, and a caregiver with respect to motivational interviewing in practice. In addition, collaboration between members of the healthcare team is highlighted in one of these exercises. Learning objective: At the end of this activity, learners will be able to: (1) Apply elements of motivational interviewing that facilitate the therapeutic bond and increase the patient’s collaboration in the treatment. (2) Identify skills and strategies to avoid the use of the “corrective reaction” when helping the patient to resolve ambivalences and incorporate the characteristics of the motivational spirit. (3) Integrate the five communication micro-skills of motivational interviewing and apply a ‘change talk’ dialogue in practice. (4) Recognize the importance of interprofessional communication to develop the skills to leverage the expertise of a team member to improve the treatment plan of a patient.
