After An Adverse Event: Healing the Healer

When a patient is harmed or dies from medical treatment, the patient and family are the obvious victims, and they are understood to need empathy and support. Less recognized is the fact that there is often downstream psychological trauma to the healthcare providers involved in the adverse event: physician, nurse or other caregiver. Peer support services are vital in repairing and restoring the traumatized provider, but these services are effectively lacking in many institutions. This activity will examine what is known about peer support services in healing the healer, what resources are available for those wishing to start such a program at their institution, and what factors favor the success of such programs.
