Agraphia

Agraphia is a poorly understood neurological condition characterized by acquired impairments in writing ability, despite intact intellectual capacity and motor function necessary for writing. The condition is not a disease in itself but commonly manifests in association with various neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases, cerebrovascular accidents, trauma, metabolic imbalances, and infectious or inflammatory conditions. Agraphia may occur in isolation but more frequently presents alongside other neurological deficits such as aphasia, apraxia, hemiparesis, or tremor. The condition is classified into central agraphia, resulting from damage to the brain s language centers, and peripheral agraphia, stemming from impairments in the motor aspects of writing. Accurate diagnosis and localization are crucial for guiding effective treatment strategies. This educational activity equips healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of agraphia, covering its epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, management approaches, and prognosis. The course emphasizes the importance of accurately identifying the type and origin of agraphia to inform targeted treatment. Additionally, it highlights the collaborative role of the interprofessional team including neurologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and rehabilitation specialists in improving patient outcomes. Through coordinated care and shared expertise, the interprofessional team enhances the accuracy of diagnosis, develops individualized treatment plans, and supports the patient s recovery and functional reintegration.
