Alcohol-Associated Hepatitis

Alcohol-associated hepatitis is a severe manifestation of alcohol-associated liver disease associated with acute jaundice, systemic inflammation, hepatic decompensation, infection risk, renal injury, and substantial short-term mortality. Despite established diagnostic criteria and validated severity tools, clinicians may inconsistently distinguish alcohol-associated hepatitis from other causes of acute liver injury, underuse severity assessment, or delay evidence-based treatment and interprofessional referral. This activity reviews the clinical definition, diagnostic evaluation, prognostic scoring, nutritional and pharmacologic treatment, complication prevention, relapse prevention, and transplant considerations for patients with alcohol-associated hepatitis. Participants gain clinically actionable strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy, risk stratification, treatment selection, infection evaluation, nutritional support, corticosteroid decision-making, and coordination with gastroenterology, addiction medicine, transplant, nutrition, pharmacy, nursing, and palliative care teams to improve patient-centered outcomes.
