All About Left Ventricular Diastology

All About Left Ventricular Diastology is an enduring educational activity designed to address variability in the acquisition and interpretation of echocardiographic parameters used to assess left ventricular diastolic function. The complexity of diastolic physiology, dependence on multiple Doppler and two-dimensional measurements, changing loading conditions, and inconsistent application of guideline-based criteria can contribute to differences in the diagnosis and grading of diastolic dysfunction. Through recorded video instruction, written educational content, and knowledge assessment, learners review the physiological basis of left ventricular relaxation and filling, acquisition of mitral inflow and tissue Doppler parameters, pulmonary venous flow assessment, estimation of left atrial pressure, and the multiparametric evaluation of diastolic function. The activity also addresses common technical and interpretive pitfalls and the integration of echocardiographic findings with clinical context. The activity is designed to strengthen the learners ability to obtain accurate diastolic measurements, systematically integrate multiple echocardiographic parameters, apply current guideline-based approaches, and recognize patterns of abnormal filling and elevated filling pressures. Following the activity, learners should be better prepared to perform consistent diastolic assessments and communicate clinically meaningful findings in echocardiography reports.
