Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer s disease is a progressive condition that affects cognition, function, communication, safety, and quality of life. This course reviews the causes, symptoms, stages, diagnostic approaches, treatment options, current research, caregiving considerations, communication strategies, ethical issues, and driving-related safety concerns associated with Alzheimer s disease. The course is designed to help healthcare professionals recognize early, middle, and late findings associated with dementia; consider reversible causes of cognitive impairment; identify diagnostic tools used in dementia evaluation; apply nonpharmacologic support strategies; and weigh the risks and benefits of medications used for behavioral symptoms. This course addresses the need for healthcare professionals to distinguish Alzheimer s disease from potentially reversible causes of dementia, support timely diagnosis and care planning, and use patient-centered strategies that promote safety, communication, caregiver support, and quality of life.
