Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace

Healthcare professionals may experience impairment from many causes, including illness, injury, fatigue, stress, mental health concerns, medication effects, substance use, or drug diversion. This course reviews how impairment may affect safe practice, how it differs from an ordinary bad day, and how to recognize concerning changes in performance, behavior, communication, physical presentation, documentation, and medication-handling patterns. Learners will review common causes and risk factors for impairment among healthcare professionals, signs that may indicate unsafe practice or drug diversion, and appropriate next steps when impairment is suspected. The course also addresses reporting responsibilities, objective documentation, chain-of-command communication, intervention principles, and return-to-work considerations that support patient safety while helping impaired professionals access appropriate evaluation, treatment, and monitoring. This course addresses a patient-safety and professional-practice need: healthcare professionals may recognize that something is wrong but may be unsure how to distinguish impairment from ordinary stress, how to document concerns without diagnosing a colleague, or how to report and respond through the proper workplace or regulatory pathway. This course also satisfies the 2-hour continuing education requirement for Florida nurses in Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace under the Florida Board of Nursing continuing education requirements.
