Amebic Liver Abscess

Amebic liver abscess is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica infection, a protozoan transmitted primarily through ingesting fecally contaminated food or water. The infection most commonly affects men younger than 50, particularly those who have traveled to or immigrated from regions where this species is endemic. After penetrating the intestinal wall, the parasite can disseminate via the portal circulation to the liver, which induces necrosis and abscess formation. Clinical symptoms often include fever, right upper quadrant abdominal pain, weight loss, and other gastrointestinal complaints. Diagnosis relies on epidemiologic risk assessment, imaging, and serologic testing, while treatment involves nitroimidazoles followed by luminal agents. In select cases, image-guided aspiration or surgical intervention is necessary. Timely diagnosis and coordinated interprofessional management are crucial in preventing complications, such as abscess rupture. This continuing education activity prepares clinicians to recognize amebic liver abscess in at-risk populations, interpret diagnostic imaging and laboratory findings, and initiate effective pharmacologic therapy. Emphasis is placed on timely diagnosis, escalation of care when necessary, and strategies for patient education regarding prevention. Engagement with an interprofessional team including infectious disease specialists, radiologists, surgeons, and primary care clinicians enhances care coordination, reduces diagnostic delays, and improves patient outcomes. Collaborative decision-making enables tailored treatment plans for complex presentations and ensures that patients with severe or recurrent disease receive comprehensive, timely interventions.
