Annual Training for Individuals Who Use Fluoroscopic Equipment

This course has been developed for physicians who use fluoroscopy in the course of their medical practice. Only a select few physicians receive extensive training in the safe use of fluoroscopy, these physicians being interventional radiologists. However, their training varies in quality and extent. Board certified radiologists receive some limited training but not to the extent of those who complete a fellowship in interventional radiology. Fluoroscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool and a critical tool for guidance of minimally-invasive therapeutic procedures. However, absent formal training on radiation management and safety, the potential for great harm to both patient and operator exists during fluoroscopically-guided procedures. Patients are at risk for radiation-induced skin injuries, some of which can be debilitating, while operators are at risk for both stochastic and deterministic radiation injuries, including cancer and cataracts. Proper education and credentialing of those who use fluoroscopy has the potential to greatly reduce the chance of harm to both patient and operator. Fluoroscopy is being utilized by more specialties and for more indications each year, and each year many physicians with little or no training in its safe use are added to the ranks of fluoroscope operators. Recently, the Joint Commission has updated its accreditation requirements to require annual training on the safe use of fluoroscopy for all healthcare personnel who operate fluoroscopic equipment. This training must cover specific topics, including principles addressed in the Image Gently campaign. This educational activity is designed to provide these physicians with focused didactic training to update their knowledge of the principles of radiation biology, radiation safety, radiation physics, and fluoroscopic imaging that will allow them to more safely utilize fluoroscopy while meeting these accreditation requirements. This activity is also designed to meet regulatory requirements and professional society guidelines covering the use of fluoroscopic imaging.
