Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer and the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in the United States, affecting nearly 1 in 5 Americans over a lifetime. Although BCC is rarely fatal, it is a locally invasive tumor that can cause significant tissue destruction, particularly in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas such as the face, ears, and periocular region. Delayed recognition and treatment may lead to ulceration, disfigurement, or recurrence, underscoring the importance of early and accurate diagnosis and treatment. This educational activity reviews BCC’s epidemiology, risk factors, and hallmark clinical features to improve early recognition. Learners will be guided through histopathologic subtypes and diagnostic methods, followed by a comprehensive overview of management strategies, including surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, electrodessication and curettage, topical therapies, and radiation for select cases. The activity also highlights advanced therapeutic options, such as hedgehog pathway inhibitors, for patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease. Emphasizing an interprofessional model of care, the activity strengthens clinical competence, promotes evidence-based decision-making, and reinforces collaborative strategies to minimize recurrence and optimize long-term outcomes.
