Bridging Basic Science and Clinical Medicine With Data-driven Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging

This seminar will describe four areas of active research in basic science and their potential clinical impact. Each of these applications focus on leveraging data-driven ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging to improve diagnostic and surgical decisions including (1) coherence-based beamforming and its impact on breast imaging, (2) the development of a deep neural network architecture, named CohereNet, to improve the speed and availability of coherence-based beamforming, (3) a novel auditory photoacoustic-based surgical guidance system for hysterectomy procedures, and (4) quantitative photoacoustic-based biomarkers to characterize thrombosis. Together these applications demonstrate an important future for data-driven methods in ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging.
