Cardiac Tamponade

Cardiac tamponade is a life-threatening emergency caused by hemodynamically significant fluid accumulation in the pericardial sac, impairing cardiac filling and reducing output. Causes include trauma, myocardial rupture, malignancy, infection, renal failure, anticoagulation, and iatrogenic injury. Rising pericardial pressure limits diastolic filling, leading to tachycardia and potential obstructive shock. Patients present with dyspnea, chest discomfort, hypotension, elevated jugular venous pressure, muffled heart sounds, and pulsus paradoxus. Diagnosis relies on clinical suspicion and echocardiographic findings, especially right ventricular diastolic collapse. Management requires urgent stabilization and prompt pericardial drainage via pericardiocentesis or surgery. This activity enhances clinicians’ ability to recognize, diagnose, and manage tamponade, improving outcomes through timely intervention and effective interprofessional care.
