Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare but life-threatening condition requiring urgent recognition and intervention that can arise as a complication secondary to underlying septic conditions, including facial infection, sinusitis, orbital cellulitis, pharyngitis, otitis, or from aseptic causes, eg, trauma or surgery, especially in the presence of a thrombophilia. This activity will provide clinicians with an overview of cavernous sinus thrombosis, highlighting associated risk factors, eg, facial infections, thrombophilia, and immunosuppression, as well as early clinical signs, including fever, periorbital swelling, and ophthalmoplegia, that are critical for timely diagnosis. The course explores diagnostic evaluations and current treatment protocols involving antibiotics, anticoagulation, and, in select cases, surgical intervention or corticosteroid use. Management of complications such as cranial nerve deficits, visual loss, and stroke, which can remain a significant risk despite treatment, is also reviewed. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying cavernous sinus thrombosis, performing the recommended evaluation, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
