Cervical Injury

Cervical spine injuries are serious clinical conditions that, although less common than other spinal injuries, pose a significant risk for long-term disability and neurological compromise. The cervical spine, composed of seven vertebrae, plays a critical role in supporting the skull, facilitating neck motion, and protecting the spinal cord. The anatomical complexity and mobility make it highly susceptible to trauma; injuries often result from high-energy mechanisms such as motor vehicle collisions, sports trauma, or falls. These injuries may present with symptoms ranging from localized pain to complete paralysis. Rapid recognition and appropriate management are essential to prevent irreversible damage. Accurate diagnosis requires a thorough understanding of spinal biomechanics and a precise interpretation of imaging results. Management may include immobilization, surgical stabilization, or rehabilitation, depending on the severity and classification of the injury. This educational activity provides clinicians with the skills and knowledge necessary to accurately evaluate and manage cervical spine injuries using current evidence-based practices. Participants learn to interpret the mechanism of trauma such as flexion, extension, axial loading, or rotational forces to guide diagnostic imaging and clinical decisions. The course emphasizes the importance of interprofessional collaboration, where coordinated care among emergency clinicians, radiologists, orthopedic or neurosurgeons, nurses, and physical therapists leads to timely diagnosis, safer intervention, and tailored rehabilitation. By fostering communication and shared clinical insight, the interprofessional team improves neurological outcomes, expedites recovery, and reduces the risk of chronic disability in patients with cervical spine trauma.
