Chikungunya Fever

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging arthropod-borne alphavirus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes that causes an acute febrile illness marked by severe polyarthralgia, rash, and potential progression to chronic inflammatory arthritis with long-term morbidity. Since its expansion from Africa and Asia to the Americas and other regions, CHIKV has become a significant global public health concern, driven by viral mutations, efficient mosquito vectors, and increased international travel. This course reviews the challenges of clinical diagnosis due to overlapping features with dengue and Zika infections, requiring appropriate laboratory confirmation as well as the recommended management approach, which remains largely supportive, with attention to pain control and avoidance of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs until dengue is excluded. Participants will also gain an understanding of the chronic manifestations of CHIKV that may require immunomodulatory therapy and the integration of preventive measures, including vaccination and vector control, to reduce disease burden and complications. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learner’s competence in identifying CHIKV, performing the recommended evaluation, addressing complications, and implementing an appropriate interprofessional approach when managing this condition.
