Cholestatic Jaundice

Cholestatic jaundice results from impaired bile flow, accumulating bile components, such as bilirubin, in the bloodstream. This condition can be classified as intrahepatic, caused by issues within the liver, or extrahepatic, resulting from obstructions outside the liver. Common clinical manifestations include jaundice, pruritus, fatigue, malabsorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins, and the appearance of skin lesions such as xanthomas. The condition has diverse etiologies, including viral hepatitis, medication-induced cholestasis, and bile duct obstructions like gallstones or tumors. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical evaluation, liver function tests, imaging studies, and, in some cases, liver biopsy. Treatment approaches focus on addressing the underlying cause and alleviating symptoms, with options ranging from medical management to surgical intervention or liver transplantation in severe cases. The course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively recognize and evaluate cholestatic jaundice. Emphasis is placed on interpreting diagnostic tests, identifying underlying causes, and implementing appropriate treatment plans. Participants gain insights into the value of interprofessional collaboration, learning how coordinated efforts among clinicians, nurses, radiologists, and dietitians contribute to improved patient outcomes. The course highlights how shared expertise from the interprofessional healthcare team ensures comprehensive care, enhances symptom management, and optimizes long-term health for individuals affected by this condition.
