Cisplatin

Cisplatin is a platinum-based cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agent widely used in the treatment of solid tumors and selected hematologic malignancies. As a non cell cycle-specific antineoplastic agent, cisplatin remains an important component of curative and palliative oncology regimens despite its significant toxicity profile. This activity reviews the approved and off-label indications for cisplatin therapy and discusses its mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics, dosing principles, and administration considerations. Particular emphasis is placed on major toxicities, including nephrotoxicity, neurotoxicity, ototoxicity, myelosuppression, gonadotoxicity, and severe nausea and vomiting, along with current prevention and monitoring strategies. Relevant drug interactions, renal dose adjustment considerations, and emerging supportive care interventions are also reviewed. In addition, this activity highlights the critical role of interprofessional collaboration among oncologists, pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in optimizing therapeutic outcomes and minimizing treatment-related complications in patients receiving cisplatin therapy.
