Clopidogrel

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medication approved for managing unstable angina, non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in patients receiving fibrinolytic therapy. Indications also include secondary prevention in cases of recent myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Several additional FDA-approved indications expand its use in clinical practice. This activity reviews the indications, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and administration of clopidogrel. Adverse effects, contraindications, and relevant drug interactions are examined to support informed decision-making in patient care. Clinical toxicology is addressed to enhance the safety and effectiveness of clopidogrel therapy. The role of the interprofessional healthcare team in optimizing treatment and monitoring strategies is emphasized, ensuring improved outcomes through collaborative care.
