Collagenous and Lymphocytic Colitis

Microscopic colitis is a chronic condition characterized by persistent, watery, non-bloody diarrhea, commonly seen in older adults. This condition is classified into 2 types: collagenous colitis, marked by a thickened collagen layer in the colon, and lymphocytic colitis, characterized by increased lymphocytes in the colon lining. The condition is often overlooked or mistaken for irritable bowel syndrome, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease due to overlapping symptoms. Diagnosis typically requires a colonoscopy with biopsies, as the colon’s appearance may be normal. Early identification is essential to managing symptoms and improving quality of life. Participants in this course learn to evaluate and differentiate microscopic colitis from other causes of chronic diarrhea, including diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The course emphasizes the importance of an interprofessional team including gastroenterologists, pathologists, and primary care providers in ensuring accurate diagnosis and coordinated care. Collaboration between team members improves patient outcomes by facilitating timely intervention, appropriate use of medications, and ongoing symptom management.
