Community-Acquired MRSA

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) represents an increasingly significant medical legal risk and a high-impact clinical challenge that is reshaping the management of skin and soft tissue infections. As CA-MRSA becomes more prevalent across community settings, clinicians in multiple specialties are encountering a growing number of cases. However, variability in presentation and evolving epidemiology mean that many practitioners remain unfamiliar with its full clinical spectrum. Awareness of current community trends, typical and atypical presentations, appropriate management strategies, and potential complications is essential to ensure timely diagnosis and safe, effective care. This activity reviews evidence-based medical literature, features expert discussion with an infectious disease specialist, and incorporates case-based analysis to guide the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of patients with CA-MRSA. After completing this activity, practitioners and members of the healthcare team should be able to: assess the risk factors that contribute to the development and recurrence of CA-MRSA infections; analyze the role of culture and sensitivity testing in the timely and accurate diagnosis of CA-MRSA infections; apply appropriate treatment protocols, including antibiotic therapy, for managing CA-MRSA infections; and implement effective infection control measures, including hand hygiene, environmental decontamination, and screening, to prevent the transmission of CA-MRSA.
