Decoding the SSc Differential Diagnosis and Performing the SSc Diagnostic Workup

Achieving a timely diagnosis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is difficult, particularly in its earliest stages, as visible signs tend to be minor or absent entirely and patients exhibit clinical heterogeneity. Primary care providers play an important role in navigating the differential diagnosis of SSc and guiding the patient through the diagnostic work up. In this activity, leading experts discuss complex patient cases highlighting presenting signs and symptoms found in SSc patients and appropriate diagnostic tools and workup to help clinicians better manage each SSc phenotype. Topics include the diagnostic criteria for very early diagnosis of SSc, the classification criteria for SSc, recommended evaluations for cardiopulmonary and auto-antibody testing, a discussion of SSc phenotypes, predictors of disease progression, and clinical red herrings.
